Hiv and pregnancy

People living with HIV have the same dreams and wishes about life like the anyone else. One of the biggest dreams for many is to get an own family. One of the most common questions is can I get a healthy baby even though I am HIV positive?

Can I have healthy kids?

Yes, people living with HIV can have healthy kids! In Finland there has been born over 200 babies to people living with HIV and they are all healthy.

HIV can be transmitted from the mother to the foetus or child during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding if the mother is not on medication. When the mother is on effective medication, there is no risk for transmission from mother to child.

Can HIV medication effect pregnancy?

Some of the HIV medicines are safe to use during pregnancy and the medication does not lead to any complications during the pregnancy or birth defects. If you plan to have a baby, it’s important to talk to your doctor about your HIV medication before trying to get pregnant.

Can I breastfeed my baby?

Breastfeeding is not recommended because it might increase the mother to child transmission. Instead of breastfeeding we recommend using the infant formula from the stores.
