In this year’s blog series, we present the writings of Hivpoint’s Health Buddies 2024 in which they reflect on their own journey in promoting sexual health.
Health Buddies spread knowledge about sexual rights and sexual health including HIV and other STIs in migrant and refugee communities. Let us present to you our wonderful Health Buddy, Jennie.
My name is Duong Nguyen, but everyone calls me Jennie. I’m originally from Vietnam and moved to Finland more than eight years ago. Back home, I worked as a registered nurse, and now I’m in my final year of studying social services at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki.
When I heard about the Health Buddy program at Hivpoint, I immediately felt drawn to it. My background in healthcare and passion for supporting diverse communities had already shaped my career path, and this program offered a unique opportunity to expand my impact. The chance to educate, support, and connect with people on such a personal level felt like a natural extension of the work I love.
“HIV and other STIs are health issues we should approach with knowledge, not fear or stigma”
Through my time organizing and facilitating workshops, I’ve learned so much about fostering an inclusive and respectful environment. Every session is different, with attendees bringing unique perspectives and questions. It’s been a meaningful challenge to adapt the content to meet various cultural understandings and comfort levels around topics that can often feel sensitive. These experiences have deepened my communication skills, allowing me to connect with people in ways that feel genuine and constructive.
One message I always emphasize in the workshops is that HIV and other STIs are health issues we should approach with knowledge, not fear or stigma. Understanding transmission, prevention and testing of HIV and other STIs can empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health and relationships.
Being a Health Buddy has been an ongoing journey of learning, connection, and advocacy. I’m grateful for the chance to contribute to Hivpoint’s mission and support others in navigating their health confidently.
Jennie
